   • Gold jewelry is one of the most beautiful forms of jewelry that will always hold its value. If the gold is pure, it does not tarnish. Some metals build up residue; but gold by itself does not. However, some people experience an allergic reaction, or they have problems with staining on their skin when carat variations of gold are combined with other types of metal. Gold artisans can hammer and form gold into practically any shape he desires. Gold is so durable, that it can even be hammered into very small string-like pieces without easily breaking.

   The Stamping Process

   • According to the 1906 National Gold and Silver Marking Act, gold jewelry is required to be stamped with the amount of carats it holds. The purpose of this is to guarantee the value of the carats. This must be done by all jewelers who sell gold or silver. Special stamping tools are used for stamping jewelry. The stamps are labeled with the karat amount on it ranging from ten carat to 24 carat. When it is time to stamp the jewelry, the proper stamp is chosen according to how many carats the jewelry consist of and the stamp is hit with a hammer. This results in a deep embossing of the carat amount imprinted inside of the jewelry piece. The jewelry is then guaranteed by the jeweler that the jewelry consist of the carat amount stamped on it within 1/2 carat.

   • Gold jewelry has markings or stamps such as 18K, 14K or 10K. The K stands for karat or carat. The markings reveal the amount of pure gold that a piece of jewelry holds. The higher the karat number, the higher the gold amount within the jewelry. For example, jewelry labeled 24K is pure gold. Eighteen karat (18K) jewelry consists of 18 fractions of gold and 6 fractions of one or more other precious metals. Eighteen karat gold is 75 percent gold. Fourteen karat (14K) gold jewelry consists of 14 fractions of gold and 10 fractions of one or more other metals. Fourteen karat jewelry is 58.3 percent gold. Twelve karat (12K) gold consists of 12 fractions of gold and 12 fractions of one or more other metals. 12K gold is 50 percent gold. Within the United States, 10K gold is the lowest karat that can be considered gold. Ten karat gold is only 41.7 percent gold.

Tips on how to tell if your jewellery is vintage

Genuine vintage jewellery is in massive demand at the moment, and rightly so.  It's got character, is often amazingly beautiful and well made, and of course no one else will own your unique piece!

As with anything that becomes fashionable, you'll always get sellers and store owners trying to cash in on the trend.  While there is of course nothing wrong with this, it can become a problem if they describe their jewellery as vintage when it isn't.  In fact at the moment I'm really disappointed at the amount of jewellery I'm seeing online that is being described as simply 'vintage', when on closer inspection it is modern 'vintage style' or a marriage of new jewellery with salvaged vintage bits and pieces attached to it.


Here are my tips to make sure you're buying genuine, real vintage jewellery.

1.  'Antiqued' gold tone is usually modern.  You know the colour I mean - that bronzed and slightly dappled dark gold plating that's really popular at the moment.  Dark antiqued gold plating has been used in the past (especially on Czechslovakian/ Bohemia region jewellery) but is quite rare, and fetches high prices.

2.  Plastic rhinestones are cheap modern alternatives to glass. Again, they are not vintage.  Tap rhinestones on your teeth to see what they are made from.  Glass has a cold hard high pitched clink, while plastic is warm and soft, and makes a much duller sounding click.

3.  Gunmetal colour (ie dark shiny pewter colour) metal is modern.

4. Cute kitsch pendants on simple chains are very popular at the moment,and are sometimes advertised as simply 'vintage'.  These are all modern made, and are not proper genuine vintage jewellery.  A seller may be using vintage componants to make the jewellery (which is fine and can be really beautifully done), but they should make this clear in both the title and description of the jewellery.  Jewellery like this is correctly called 'vintage inspired'...'vintage recycled' ....'vintage reworked' or 'vintage style' etc.....not just 'vintage'. 

I've actually seen a seller describe their modern jewellery (which happens to have a little piece of vintage jewellery stuck onto it) as simply " 'vintage handmade necklace". I understand completely that sellers need to make money, and want to get to the top of jewellery searches in search engines.  However, surely this kind of description can't be right?  How would this seller feel if they'd bought a 'vintage handmade' Art Deco wardrobe' only to find out it's a modern wardrobe with Art Deco handles stuck on it?

5.  Genuine vintage jewellery is unique, which is why it is so sought after.  If you see words such as 'limited stock on this item' it will not be authentic vintage jewellery.  

6.  Always read the 'about me' or 'about us' page of a website.  Who is it that you are buying from?  Are they experienced vintage jewellery dealers?  Do you get a feel for their love of genuine vintage jewellery?

7.  If the description of a jewellery item only says 'vintage' and doesn't give an actual approximate date to the item (eg made circa 1950-60s, or made circa late 19th century) then be a little wary, and email the seller for a date to the item.

Do not store rhinestone jewelry in plastic bags for long periods of time. Moisture may get trapped inside and destroy the rhinestones.

Vintage costume jewelry is often made from a material called Pot Metal. It is a relatively soft compared to precious metals and care should be taken not to bend or crush it.

Rhinestones are usually always foil backed. If you cannot tell if the stone is foil backed or not, better safe than sorry, err on the side of caution.

Never immerse rhinestone jewelry in any kind of liquid.

Never use toothpaste or a hard brush or any type of abrasive or ammonia based cleaner on rhinestone or crystal, in particular rhinestones finished with an opalescent coating that appears to give the stones a sheen and a color change appearance that is called - Aurora Borealis.

To clean a piece of rhinestone jewelry, use a slightly damp soft lint-free cloth, and a small amount of foam glass cleaner, which is ammonia-free. With careful strokes, gently clean the surface of the stones.
